Some things to know: Beaver Island is an exquisite retreat from the grind of urban or suburban living. Guests are surrounded by the bounty of nature and living that is detached from the rest of the world. As such, despite vigorous housekeeping efforts, occasionally spiders and other woodland interlopers will make their way into the cottage. Guests who have anxieties about these issues are encouraged to discuss them with us ahead of time.
PLEASE NOTE – A FEW GUIDELINES FOR THE COTTAGE:
1. Keep Beaver Island clean and pristine. As you walk along the exquisite shoreline here on Wicklow beach, remember the beach sits in a delicate balance. Please avoid tromping on the grasses or removing any wood from the beach. There should be plenty of wood for fires stored at the house. If you spot manmade containers or other refuse, please grab it and throw it away.
2. Trash and recycling. There is a transfer station right next to Welke airport where you can drop off garbage in green bags and your recyclables. Please drop off everything on your way to the airport or ferry before you leave.
3. Linens and towels. Guests are required to furnish their own bed linens and towels for the cottage. There is a laundary room available for you to use in the basement if you need to wash/dry any of your belongings during your stay.
4. If you are going to have a fire on the beach, please check the fire rating at the local ranger station. On high-fire risk weeks, we ask that you refrain from outdoor fires. Please use wood from the cord in the side yard, not from trees or branches on the property or adjacent lots. Please put out fires with water from the lake to keep the beach clean and usable for other guests.
5. Checkout is at 11am. We’d like to make it later, but the cleaning crew has only a few hours to turn the cottage around for the next guests. Please help them out by cleaning all of your dishes before you leave and you take everything out of the refrigerator.
6. There is a local phone available for emergencies, or to check out the special of the day at the Shamrock. However, you must use a credit card or collect call for anything outside of Beaver Island.
7. Please remember that we have a septic system, not a sewer. So please do not put anything down the toilet except toilet paper – including paper towels, sanitary napkins or other paper products.
8. Please only put the provided wood into the fireplaces – anything else can cause problems in the chimney. Also, please do not cook anything substantial in the fireplaces (marshmallows of course are the exception).
9. If something breaks or malfunctions, please let us know so we can have it repaired or replaced for the next set of guests coming in to the cottage.
Thanks for following these simple rules to keep the cottage and the Island fun for all.
